Deuteronomy 9

Review & Intro - Moses has reviewed the 10 commandments with the Israelites and reminded them that the trials in the wilderness have all had a purpose in causing them to depend on Him and not on themselves; to be humble and obedient so that He might bless them. In Chapter 9, the day has come for them to cross over the Jordan and possess the land that the Lord promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The time has come. Is it because Israel is righteous and deserving of this? No, definitely not. It is His grace and the fact that He keeps His covenant promises. Amen. Deuteronomy Chapter 9 - Observation Questions 1. What was happening on the day of this speech by Moses to Israel? vs. 1 They were to cross Jordon River 2. What kind of nations were they going to dispossess? vs. 1 - Name 3 things (1) greatier  (2)mightier than them. (3)cities  that were greatier  and fenced up. 3. What kind of people were they going to defeat? vs. 2 - Name 3 things (1)great. (2)tall (3) childern of Amakins 4. Who was crossing over before them and how was it manifested? vs. 3 The Lord God. 5. What was the Lord going to do to the people so that Israel could then drive them out and destroy them quickly? vs. 3 Bring them  down to  their faces 6. What was "not' the reason that the Lord had driven out the people before them? vs. 4 Their righouness 7. What "was" the reason He had done so? vs. 4 These nations wickness 8. What was the Lord confirming when He gave the land to Israel? vs. 5 The proimes that He made to their fore fathers 9. It was not the "righteousness" of Israel that was the reason why God was giving them this good land to possess. In fact, what kind of people were they? vs. 6 stiffednecked 10. Moses wants them to remember how they had provoked the Lord to wrath in the wilderness journey. How long were they rebellious against the Lord? vs. 7 From the time they started this jouney till the stopped this founey. 11. Just how angry was the Lord with Israel at Horeb? vs. 8 To destoy them. 12. Who made the tablets of stone for the people? vs. 9 God 13. How long was Moses on the mountain when he went up to receive these tablets? vs. 940days and 40 nights. 14. How long did Moses go without food and water? vs. 9 40 days and 40 nights. 15. Who wrote the ten commandments on the stones given to Moses? vs. 10God 16. The Lord gave the tablets of stone to Moses at the end of the 40 days and night.(vs.11) ... Why did the Lord tell Moses to hurry down quickly to the people at that time? What had the people turned aside from the Lord to do? vs. 12 Thfey had sinned  against God 17. What did the Lord want to do to this stubborn people at that time? vs. 13 destoy them 18. What did the Lord want to do concerning Moses? vs. 14 Make  him a nation greater and mightier than them. 19. Moses came down from the mountain with the tablets in his hands that God had written and made for them. (vs.15). What did Moses witness with his eyes at that time? vs. 16  had made a mlten calf and sinned  against God. 20. What did Moses do with the tablets of stone that God had written with His own finger? vs. 17 trow thm down on the ground and broke them. 21. Moses fell down before the Lord for another 40 days and nights. Again, he did not eat bread or drink water. What was he interceding for? vs. 18 Because  of their sins against God 22. What was Moses afraid of? vs. 19 He was afraisd of God's angey and displeaure  with them and that He (God)  would desoy them 23. Moses was not destroyed for approaching God through prayer and fasting for the people. How did the Lord respond to his intercessory prayers? vs. 19 Just as God listenin g to our prayers  he did moses also and answered it . 24. Aaron was the high priest at that time. What was the Lord angry enough to do to him? vs. 20-destoy him 25. What did Moses do that changed the Lord's mind? vs. 20praied for him 26. What did Moses do with the calf that Aaron had made from all the jewlery and gold items given to him? vs. 21 - Name 4 things And I took your sin, the calf which ye had made, and burnt it with fire, and stamped it, and ground it very small, even until it was as small as dust: and I cast the dust thereof into the brook that descended out of the mount. 27. Name 3 other places where they provoked the Lord to wrath. (vs.22)Taberah, and at Massah, and at Kibrothhattaavah, 28. In Kadesh-barnea, the Lord told them to go in and possess the land at that time. The 12 spies went in and brought back fruit of the good land. 10 of the 12 gave a bad report of the giants in the land although Caleb and Joshua had faith and believed God would deliver them into their hands. How did the people react toward the Lord at that time? vs. 23 - Name 3 things They didn't believe them they did'nt listen to them. 29. How long had Moses known the people to be rebellious toward the Lord? vs. 24 From the day he knew them. 30. Why did Moses fast and pray for them for 40 days and nights before the Lord? vs. 25 Because the Lord was going to destoy them for dinning against His words. 31. What did Moses remind the Lord concerning the people in his prayer? vs. 26 - Name 3 things26I prayed therefore unto the LORD, and said, O Lord GOD, destroy not thy people and thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed through thy greatness, which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 32. Who did Moses bring the Lord to remember in his prayer of intercession? vs. 27 - Name 3 who He had made covenant with., Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob 33. How did Moses convince the Lord that He should not look at their stubbornness... or their wickedness ... or their sin? vs. 28-Lest the land whence thou broughtest us out say, Because the LORD was not able to bring them into the land which he promised them, and because he hated them, he hath brought them out to slay them in the wilderness 34. In the final outcome, who were these people and what had the Lord done for them? vs. 2929Yet they are thy people and thine inheritance, which thou broughtest out by thy mighty power and by thy stretched out arm. Application: 35. The Lord offered to make another people after Moses' name, but Moses did not take Him up on it. Moses was humble and wanted God to keep His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He did not want any glory; he only wanted the Lord's Name and Power to be honored among the nations and that would be done as He kept His promises to His people. How wonderful to see Moses intercede in prayer for them that the Lord would not destroy them in His wrath. Who are you interceding for today? Is there someone that does not deserve God's grace as Israel did not, but they need His mercy as you did at one time? Share your prayer requests of who you are praying for that God not destroy, but have mercy upon. 36. We see that God is a consuming fire as He goes before us destroying those things that are enemies of the darkness. Yet, there is responsiblity for us to take those things captive and stand firm in obedience to His commands. As we look at the wrath of God, we also see the grace of God. In the end, He listened to the prayers of His servant Moses and He re-wrote the 10 commandments again after Moses had destroyed the first set. That is grace. He is the Lord who has new mercies every morning. Great is His faithfulness! How has the Lord shown you His mercies today? 37. Summarize this lesson and post a prayer if you would like.
