Review & Intro: In Deuteronomy Chapter 4, we looked at how the Lord longed for them to follow His commandments, but knew in advance that they would follow after other gods and cause Him to discipline them, scattering them away from the land He would give to them. Yet, He reassured them that they would seek Him when they became distressed and they would find Him when they sought Him with their heart. Now, Moses will review the 10 commandments with them, and express to them again how the Lord gave him all the statutes, judgments, and ordinances for them to follow in order to have the Lord's blessings upon them. God's law is the standard. He must lay it out for them to know right from wrong and to know how He cares enough to set boundaries up for them.
Deuteronomy Chapter 5 - Observation Questions
1. Moses summoned all of Israel to hear the statutes and ordinances he was speaking to them that they may learn them and observe them carefully. (vs.1) ... He reminded them that the Lord made a covenant with them at Horeb that He had not made with their fathers. (vs.2) ... The Lord spoke to them from the fire on the mountain. (vs.3,4) ... Who stood between them and the Lord because of their fear? vs. 5-Moses
2. What did Moses declare to them? vs. 5-God's word
3. The Lord told them, "I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery" (vs.6) ... and then He gave the 10 commandments. List them below. (vs.7-21)
1)
1111.)Yous shall have no other gods before you.
You will not make any graving imges2.)
3) You will not take the lord's name in vain.
4)Observe the Saveath and keep it holy

6)Do not muder
7)do not steal
8) do not bear false wittnes against your neibor
9)do not commit adultery
10)do not covet your neightbors wife and shall not desire your neighbors house.
4. How does the Lord describe Himself? vs. 9 He is a jealous God
5. Are you blessed that God is 'jealous' for you? Share if you would like.
6. We know that as believers we are part of the generations that have loved the Lord. For those who have hated Him, are the children doomed to have a generational curse upon them for their father's sin? The good news is that although some addictions and behaviors are certainly harder to break when a parent has done certain things, each person is accountable to God for their own sin; not that of his or her parents. Comment on the following verses:
- Deuteronomy 24:16God wants us to know Him for real not jut what others tell us about Him He wants a real relationship with each of us one on one.
- Ezekiel 18 - entire chapter
So, everytime a person is born again and comes into the kingdom of God, we have a new Father and a new family. We become a new creation! Amen.
7. For those who take the Lord's Name in vain, what will surely happen to them? vs. 11
God will not hold them guiltless
Note: What do you think it means to take His Name in vain? Do you think it is when we use God's name as a curse to another? That would be one way, but think about the meaning of the word "vain". It means "emptiness, vanity, falsehood, lying, worthlessness" ...So it could mean that we apply God's Name to things He has not said that turn out to not be true and we hurt His Name and Character for doing so. It could be not giving the correct estimate of Who He is to others when we complain and murmer. It is far more than just using it as a curse word. Personally, I never speak for God, other than to take the people to His Word and let the Word speak for Himself. Amen.
8. What promise came to Israel if they would honor their fathers and their mothers? vs. 16
Their lives would be prolonged.
9. These were the words that the Lord spoke to the assembly from the midst of the fire on the mountain. He did not add anything else. What else did He personally do for them? vs. 22
added.
10. The people came near to Moses through the heads of their tribes and elders (vs.23) ... What had the people experienced for themselves? vs. 24 - Name 4 things
His greatness, his glory and HIs voice
11. The people were afraid to continue to hear the voice of the Lord for fear of their lives. (vs.25,26) ...
obedtian heart so the woud keep his commandments
They asked that Moses hear and then tell them what God spoke to him. They said they would hear and do it. (vs.27) ... The Lord said that had done well in all they had spoken concerning that. (vs. 28) ... What kind of heart did the Lord desire that they would have and why? vs. 29 -
12. After the people went back to their tents, the Lord spoke directly to Moses all the commandments, statutes, and judgments he was to teach the people so that they would observe them in the land they were going to be given as a possession. (vs.31) ... If they would not turn to the right or the left, but stay focused on God's will, what would He do for them? vs. 32,33 -That you may live and be well and prolong your life.
Application:
13. One of the key verses is when the Lord speaks His heart in saying in verse 29 - "Oh, that they had such a heart in them, that they would fear Me and keep My commandments" - We can sense that He knows they cannot keep His Word. He knew that one day, with the coming of the Holy Spirit, man would finally be able to have that kind of heart within them. Take time to comment on the following verses of the Promise of the Spirit coming, and the things we have today because we have believed in the death, burial, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus the Christ, and He has given the Holy Spirit to us! Amen.
